Well, it doesn't look like the smoker is at fault and as you say, your son has dropped the TX so he may have damaged it - they are robust radios but don't like sudden shock loads applied to them - like any electronics really.
You could try taking the TX apart and see if the switch gear is loose or has a broken wire etc. Apart from that - it's another TX.
