You have to learn to walk before you run. Between radio programming, file manipulation, and wiring there is a real learning curve. Go slow, before you jump into the deep end is my advice. Anything too complex for a beginner will end up a frustrating experience and quite possibly end up in a drawer.
Vendor support is crucial for a beginner and should be your first concern.
