Another glue to try for some situations is the Gorilla glue for wood. Its white in the bottle, dries clear.Once it dries its like a tough hard rubber texture. I haven't used it the way you describe on hinges ..however it does seem strong and tough..but I try not to use it anywhere I will need to sand down smooth.
