I am building a VK Models Fokker DR-1 from a 1970s kit the only wood I had a problem with was the one lone piece of Spruce that was too hard to slot for hinges. I would recommend you take the lid off the box and give it a couple of days sitting on the building table to become acclimated to the room temperature and humidity level. I do this with every kit, new or old, it helps you get a good straight and true build. (It also gives you an excuse to look over the plans and study any build instructions sevral times before starting.)
