You sound old school, like me, with your break in process. Can't argue with success. My Savage SS still has the original 4.6 (.28) in it. Almost 8 gallons through it. I'm a huge fan of Picco, and ran gallons through 6 different ones. The plan was to replace it with one of theirs, but it just keeps going. I'm not complaining, just surprised. Proper break in, makes a big difference.
Rusty.......just get one. Nothing like the smell of nitro. It'll bring a tear to your eye. Literally! Lol.
