Way before the minivan and back when I thought I was cool, I drove something very similar to one of these German types shown in the first pic - I had a basket mounted on the right side of the rear wheel to carry a Catoctin Mountain Orchard, cardboard box with fuel and battery - I carried the airplane in one free hand and steered with the other.
My friend owned one of these British ones in the second pic and its what drove the desire for this type of ride -
Third and forth pic show the coolness factor of form following function that inspired many of the generation to have a need for such a ride - hi-rise handlebars, banana seat, sissy bar, big wheel in the rear, little wheel up front, stick shifter, short flared fenders...
