Regarding straight edges, one might want to check their local home improvement center. Sections of aluminum bars, channels, etc. can be had for a reasonable price. Sight down the edge and purchase the one that is straightest at the length wanted.
Oh, and BTW, standard facility construction quality is 0.25" per 8 foot, which suits my standards.
