Imagine what could have been had they developed the Tomcat further especially when the program was retired too early. What a machine!
I thought it was interesting when it was stated that the Super Hornet ended up being about the same size as the F-14 but still lacks the speed and range as the F-14.
Politics was the end of the F-14. It had a couple of issues which had been worked out for the "D" model and would have been a much better airplane than the F-18, but politicians who's districts included the manufacturer's of the various components and the airframe, had more horsepower than the guys representing the districts where the Grumman's were built.
Took me a long time to get one and I've still not flown it as it needs it's air system completely replaced, but it's the SM in the Jolly Roger scheme.
