Yes sir, I remember Clarence Lee saying the the ring less Saitos had poor compression when hot, made them difficult to start.
And a bit anemic as well from what I've read. Things got better with rings and hotter cams. Both the 30s and 45s ringed engines are reported to be lovely runners. I would love to have a 30S for my mystery vintage highwing plane.
