That is slimy at best.... and it was Hanson who did it, without a single protest from the EC.

Andy, I have to agree with Franklin here. I recall seeing Hanson's use of his column in Model Aviation to disparage his competitor for office and it struck me at the time, and still does, to be at the very least, highly unethical. Perhaps not a textbook definition of "rigging" but in my opinion, very very bad form!
