Default RE: Glow plug starter

Well, a glow plug heater is just a 1 1/2 volt battery with a glow plug connector attached. You could use an ordinary battery but it would probably only last for about a dozen engine starts. The connector you would probably have to buy.

A starter is just a twelve volt motor with a rubber cone to hold onto your plane's spinner, so I guess you could use some other 12 volt DC motor. Or you could just use a stick or a leather glove on your hand to flip the prop.

But better still, if you find a club and/or instructor to help you learn to fly, he will surely have both of these items already and will be happy to let you use them until you get your own.

There have been many, many exchanges here about the importance of having someone help you learn to fly. I am of the opinion that a person can teach himself to fly but it will take MUCH longer and be much more frustrating. Possibly even dangerous. To me the best part of this hobby/sport is hanging out and chewing the fat with the guys at the field.

Good Luck!
