That is a situation I come across quite often. I would think there would be no problem stopping the charge cycle, disconnecting and securing the battery in its storage container until you return. This is assuming you would return within 24 os so hours. After returning, I would either charge the battery if you plan on using it or returning it to storage voltage if the battery will not be used within 24hrs.

I would think stopping in mid charge is no different than a partially used battery.
