Rivets on tanks were a bad idea because any large impact could send them bouncing around inside the tank. So even none penetrating hits could be fatal to the crew.

There wasn't enough manufacturing capacity to cast or welded tank hulls in the numbers we needed so they had to make do with riveted ones.
