You could finish with resin on the bare wood, but it has very little ding resistance. I finished an airplane with this method back in the day and it did not hold up very well. I recommend using the lightest cloth you can find.
I have found that a slightly heavier cloth (2 oz) with high thread count takes less resin to bond. Been out of pattern since about 2012, and this Lightning is my top contender for getting back in.
