Mark Pauline of "Survival Research Laboratories" builds all sorts of outrageous bits, and has a hovercraft with pulsejets for direction and thrust.

Seeing this thing in person is an amazing experience. But his jets are HUGE, way too large for planes, although he does seem to have the throttling worked out.
