Hello there..we have 2 tl01 cars. I set one up for my boy with the speed tuned gear set, 23t pinion, tamiya black sport tuned motor, generic aluminum threaded body dampers, and foam tires for the carpet. Its only running off a 3000 duratrax onyx 6cell pack. It runs pretty good, decent top speed. No ball bearings, just plastic bushings. At one point i ran this car, bone stock except for 12t caliber speedworks motor, a duratrax streak esc, and a 3300 mah matched tvis pack i soldered up. The car was very fast, easy to drift etc... I would say a lighter side of brushless would work fine. Just dont over do it...good luck. Im pretty sure a tamiya sensored brushless setup would work well, or the equivalent.
