Here in the UK, shut down is not mandatory , setting failsafe to IDLE is the near norm, not in my jets, the engine shuts down immediately.
A model with no control, litres of jet fuel and a running engine a potential ignition source, which may crash anywhere fate takes it , with a possible serious fire, is simply not the safest option.
On the safety section of the BVM web site Bob stated that at the first sign of control problems SHUT DOWN the engine ! Makes sense to me.
