It sounds like a fairly ambitious project. A further though: some of the 3-D fliers and scale builder use a header pipe and a remote muffler. Some of these setups can even provide a little bit of tuned pipe effect. Since you are already designing in alternative power sources and heat shielding one of the can mufflers wouldn't be that big of a deal. You might want to do a search for "cannister mufflers".
