This thread was started 14 years ago. Much has changed since then. I now fly small electric hand launched models that require instant corrections upon launching. There is no time to get my hand back onto the transmitter and my micro receivers do not have SAFE mode. The only way I can launch with instant control is to launch with my left hand while I have my right hand on the Mode 2 stick (aileron/elevator) while the transmitter hangs from a neck strap. I agree that Mode 1 can be more accurate because of the bio-mechanical aspects of how our fingers work while trying to move a 2 axis stick along only one axis. It is very difficult to move the ailerons without also inducing a very slight amount of elevator. Try it... very hard to do when making large aileron displacements. Mode 1 separates the ailerons to the left stick where a slight change in throttle while moving the ailerons will not be noticed. Mode 1 and Mode 2 both have their applications. Pylon and pattern can be flown more accurately in Mode 1. Combat, gliders, helicopters and most sport flying may be more enjoyable in Mode 2. Which mode is best depends on what type of flying you are doing.
