As far as I know, they were all painted. The "wickelrumph" construction was made of strips of veneer laid at a bias to one another and then covered in fabric. I have seen photos of planes that have been in the field for a while. The glue joints can be seen through the fabric but I don't think there were any varnish only wood finishes on Pfalz airplanes.
