Mounting the Carbon Fiber Landing Gear
Centerline is still barley visible, this will come in handy!
I carefully measured and drilled out the CF landing gear on my drill press to ensure straight holes. Note the centerline on the blue tape lined up with the plane's centerline. It's time to drill out the four holes. I can't use my drill press this time. So I came up with this...
I made a simple jig from a scrap 3/4" pine board. I first placed a centerline on the board, then I placed the CF gear over the top of the board, being careful to have the centerlines lined up with each other. I then used my drill press and transferred the holes from the CF gear to the board using my drill press
.
I slipped the jig into the landing gear pocket and lined up the centerlines.
Using my cordless hand drill, I can now drill a straight hole!
After the first hole was drilled, I inserted another drill bit into the hole. This will ensure the jig doesn't shift when drilling the other holes. Centerline is still good...
All the holes are drilled, now it's time to locate the gear on the centerline and drop the bolts through...I hope!
Perfect, no binding. 8-32 bolts were used
The underside, no blind nuts used here. I wanted a solid base so a strip of aluminum was cut and fit.
I think I'm ok...
