What you failed to mention is that you need to cut the 8 cell pack apart, and then should really solder on the connectors. But yes, a simple, inxpensive solution.

I bought three 1100 mAh, NiMH packs (with connectors) on eBay for about $25 shipped. I think that's a better deal.
