Were you thinking electric? or nitro? Sounds like a neat project, but it definitely has the potential to get very very complicated. Would roll be controlled by speeding up fans on one side and not the other, or some other method? What about pitch, speed up fans in the front, or use an elevator? Would you mount another engine on the front, to produce forward thrust, or do you want to make the fans rotate? If so, how are you going to keep that thing in the air when the fans are at a 45 degree angle, and aren't providing enough thrust to keep it aloft, and there is not enough forward motion to allow it to fly in a conventional manner?
I'm not trying to sound discouraging, but to me it seems there are a lot of hurdles to jump, and could get VERY complicated. I don't know all that much about the full sized one, but I'm sure they had a hard time solving some of the many problems of this hybrid type of flight.
It is a really neat project though, and would enjoy hearing what you have in mind! Good luck!
