Yeah, beyond a certain point, you are only adding weight, not strength. It is more important is insure a good fit in the joints, pre-glue the end grain (when using wood glue or Ambroid type cement), let the pre-glue dry and soak into the end grain a bit, then reglue and assemble. I hit the joint with a toothpick or Q-tip (for neatness) and leave it go at that.
