The times I've had to do it, I put a rag around the flywheel (a couple of layers) and then I used a pair of vice grips around that. The vice grips that I have have a curved jaw and the edge of the flywheel sits in there nicely. I've never hurt any of my flywheels doing that. Just another way to do it.
