The RTR versions make the companies a lot of money. People try it, they break it, they move on. The folks that stay with the hobby will move away from the RTR's and into the kits.

Kits are definitely the way to go, but RTR does provide a way to bring new people into the hobby. Also, it keeps the manufactures that make our kits alive. I think it's more of a marketing thing than anything. I see it as a necessary evil.
