Default Silly Autocad question

OK this may seem elementry, but how do I change a line type in Autocad (specifically 2002)? I have an object selected (line) , and then chose the line type from the line type dropdown box. It shows as changed there and in the properties, but on screen it is still a solid line. Same with line width. Shows the same in the ddropdown box, and properties dialog box, but no change on screen. Also set the layer for this, and then drew the line, but no change on screen. Tried to redraw/regen with no change. Color works just fine.

I've been a Ashlar Drawingboard user for years now, but I'm sending stuff to be laser cut, and the DXF export in Drawing Board doesn't work all that well, so I thought I'd learn Autocad. Soemthings in Autocad aren't as obvious as in DB
