Why are there so few 1/2a flyers?
A lot is being made of small engine fussiness. Maybe this was true in the past, I don't know. My only experience has been with Norvels engines, the .074 and .061, and to me they are as easy to run and tune as any .40 size engine out there. My .074 in particular always starts on the first or second flip, I dial it in by ear the same way I would my .40's and .46's, and it holds the setting all day. It never cuts out on me, my only dead sticks have been caused by lack of fuel, and I don't go nuts trying to find an area big enough to fly it in. Fussy is not the word to describe my experience with 1/2a engines. Now, the short time I spent dabbling in electric flight, the word fussy definately applies, along with a few other choice adjectives.
