RE: thinking about it
1.) Reversing the flat metal detent spring will solve that problem. Works just fine for fixed wing (I started with fixed wing).
2.) Learning curve? Don't worry about it. I read somewhere a while back that says is all, remember that there is no time limit. Just try to be a little better each time you go out.
3.) I personally fly a Hawk Sport and think it is the best choice for a beginner (or experienced pilot) but, as stated, most of the available helicopters get the job done. If you have a well stocked local hobby shop, consider what they offer. You might want to consider a 50 or 60 size machine. More money but also much more stable and visible. Obviously your radio won't be a problem. I use a 9C myself.
