Unless you have lots of excess altitude, the best thing by far is to just land straight ahead. Don't try to turn or maneuver, just land. If you got lots of altitude, you can play a little bit but only as required to find a suitable landing spot. No funny stuff, no tricks, no messing around, land straight ahead.
