JUST REMEMBERED AN OLD ONE!!!
One last try here- if you crashed the plane with the engine in question, but didn't destroy it, there is a chance that the clunk line got folded forward. This is fairly common even with some light "nose over" type crashes. Pick up the plane (nose high) and give it a few abrupt downward shakes, then gently shake the plane and listen for the clunk line to rattle around. (tank empty)
If ya do go the new tank route, go to the LHS and check out the different tanks, some (Great planes) are easier to work with. Also the LHS owner may help you put it together before ya leave the shop. Just be sure to stop in and ask if they will first, and then do it when they aren't busy.
Make or buy an engine test stand and when you pull the old tank, use it (if it's good) on the stand.
