Default RE: Trickle charge on hobbico mkII

Hi,

I've only had one problem when charging NiMh, and it was due to my lack of knowledge of the charger.

The problem was my packs overheating. It happened when I decided to "top off" an already charged pack.

Apparently the charger and senses the voltage of the battery to be charged and then calculates what it needs to do to charge that battery pack. The problem is, if the battery is already charged, the charger may "think" its at the low end of a pack that has one more cell, instead of the high end of an already charged pack. If it does this, it will falsely try and charge as if the pack is at the low end of a larger pack, this will cause overcharging and results in overheating.

I have a hard time explaining this, I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

In order to prevent this, you should always make sure you are charging a pack that has the excess charge removed to prevent over charging. If you are not sure of the state of the battery, just use it for 15 to 30 seconds to remove the excess charge and prevent a false reading to the MKII. If you do this, you will have no problems.

I've only charged NiCd and NiMh, I'm not sure about Li-Ion and Li-Po's. I've only heard that this charger will only charge LiPo's to 95% capacity.

Another thing. I'm told the MKII will automatically go into an idle charge state when the battery is fully charged, it will remain in the idle state for as long as it is plugged in. I don't know what the idle rate is, and probably should try and measure it some day.

However, another thing to note is that the MKII has an automatic cut off. That is, if the battery is NOT charged within 2 hours, it will NOT go into an idle state and will automatically shut off as a safety precaution. Larger capacity batteries (such as 3000mah) may not be able to charge in one shot and therefore will time out at 2 hours on the first charge.

I could not find some of the above information in the manual and got it through experience, asking a lot of questions on RC Universe and with the MKII support. The above is to the best of my knowledge. If anyone has any further information, or corrections, please let me know.

Hope the above explaination has helped someone.

Best regards,

Wayne Miller
