Just a quick opinion!!!
I don`t think the pilot had much of a chance steering away from anything. Take a look at the video
and you will see that everything looks quite normal, then suddenly he makes the quickest move ever to get the ...... out !!!!!
Amazing footage though. The pilot walked away from it!!! Bet his airtime in the chute wasn`t the longest.

Just a quick opinion - your opinion is worth the paper is written on. Look again at the video yourself and you will see that 1) you can't see any movements of the side-stick controller, so you can't tell of he banked during the last part of the maneuver to steer in one direction or not, and 2) he moves his left hand from the throttle to the eject handle while still in the nose-down position, moves it quickly back to the throttle to do something, and then moves it back the the eject handle and then punches out - clearly indicating he was thinking about getting out several seconds before he actually did so. Plenty of time to alter the course by the several degrees off of the runway heading necessary to put the aircraft down on the grass/dirt area where he did vs. the runway where parts could have sprayed into the crowd.
