I haven't had mine all that long, so I couldn't argue the best combos. Mine is fully GWS equipped and it flies great, I love it. Might wanna check out the new Model Airplane News, there's a very interesting article on a Slow Stick upgrade in it. One part in particular, the author clipped the wings at the last "rib" and claimed it made it more stable in wind.
