I don't think that could happeneven in SSC. At least, I've never seen it happen anyway.
The surveyorrs tape isn't that strong compared to a spinning prop at speed. It's made to break or tear easily enough for workers to break it by hand when using it for surveying purposes.
The crochet string we use is stronger than the ribbon and the props break it. Hitting a ribbon with the wing of your plane usually won't break the ribbon.
I'd think that since the ribbon in the winter becomes brittle it is less strong in the winter below 25 degrees.
