i don't see why the tank fouls, the old one didnt get close. try a different one or if it's one of the bottle types use a hair dryer to warm the plastic then shape the rear a bit different. how far do your mount bolts go into the fuz? maybe the tank can move a bit further forwards then?
just looked at your pics, yep, melt that tank a little.. also be careful tightening that wing bolt, the ni-cad doesnt look far away. weird to see it there and not up the *****, maybe that nose is a bit longer now
