Default RE: the posibilities of parachutes? parafoils? and other foldable materials.

There are a few Parafoil type models available.

The cheap one by Hobbico is 2 channel... just throttle and a sort of foil warping or balance changing (pulling shrouds) for turning. Its nearly impossible to stall by design.

There are larger ones with up to 4 channel control that I have seen advertised. These more closely resemble the "ParaPlane" which is a one man carying parafoil with a Rotax engine like is used in a lot of rigid wing ultralights. Very interrestig models... but somewhat expensive. (the sewing on the parafoil is a beast. then getting all the lines the exact right lenghts... they deserve what they charge for them.)

THe bitgger ones can handle more wind... as they can fly faster.

An option you might consider is look at the "IFO" Its a very small electric model that can fly in light winds. Its tail pops off to make the thing virtually flat. That would be something that mght fit your desire for an easilly transportable model... it fits in a briefcase with the transmitter.
