Because this puts a side load on the horn instead of pulling evenly from both sides, the horn snapped under load and the elevator fluttered off the plane. I agree with you that ball links is not a good option on FG control horns unless you install two FG horns side by side with the ball between them. I use 3mm. Kavan metal snap-links on mine, so it should be OK.

Did it happened at very high speed??
