I agree with those that say you shouldn't give up yet. I know it might be kind of humbling after flying for 45 years, but I would ask an instructor to take you up with a trainer on the buddy box for a few flights. For one, you would get some fun flying in without fear of crashing. This would build up some confidence. Also the instructor would be able to give you a good assessment of your flying.

I would also recommend an easier flying plane such as a Kadet Senior or Senorita. With the recommended power things happen so slow on those planes that the "Ooops" you described earlier would have been easily corrected.

That's just my take on your situation. You can always help new people out.
