The old format had an indicator for threads where the user had contributed. Sometimes I just like to have a quick look at the forums and see if there were any follow-up posts to threads where I had participated. Since I often forget which threads I posted to, I found the indicator dot was a quick way to zero in on the specific posts. I realize that I could subscribe to these threads but the other way worked well for me.
