Default Good Kit for a first timer?

What is a good kit for the first time builder?

I really like the Tamyia TLT-1 Rockbuster. Price for this kit can get crazy north of the border 225, or 275 with a 19T motor. It looks like 150 (200 cdn), American is a good price for this kit.

I know that there are a lot of items missing from the kit. Battery, motor, Transmitter, receiver, Servo (x 2 for 4 wheel steering) and an Electronic speed control.

How do I know what products are compatable with each other? I have good transmitter, but the receiver is in my nitro. If I go out and buy everything I need will the servos work with any receiver will the reciever work with my transmitter?

What is the purpose of a ESC? Is this more or less a servo for an electric engine?

I was looking on ebay at things that I would need, but I want them to work with the other things I still need to get.

Any suggestions are appreciated.
