Doinked the Venture
Finally got the courage to try an auto last night.
The first one went ok, I actually did it. I put it up a few hundred feet, hit the throttle hold, put full down collective in, kept my forward speed up just a little, brought it straight in, flared at the bottom and landed. I still had just a little forward speed when I landed but she didn't tip, no damage; Success !!
Well, I decided I better try one from the other direction. But, this time I thought I'm going to flare a little sooner and bring it straight down. On my first one my blades still had allot of energy in them I didn't use ( still spinning hard ). I came in did ever thing the same but, I still didn't flare enough and hit the ground a little hard. The blades came down and hit the tail boom.
Damage: tail boom $12, Main blades $30, one of the FLYBAR CONTROL ARMs cracked $13, Horizontal fin $3 Total = $58 . I had all this stuff in the $50 crash kit from heliproz except the Flybar control arm.
This was probably the first time I REALLY wished I had another (more experienced) heli pilot there to talk me through the maneuver.
OH Well, at least I did one correctly.
