I would suggest that there is a Wrbird that would be fine for you. Meister Scale has a Spitfire That if build by the plans makes a great warbird trainer. It has a almost flat bottom wing and is designed around a 90 2stroke. It has a 96" wing span and would be all monokote covered. It does not need retracts. It lands slower than most trainers.
I use to take mine to the field and let people still on trainers fly it. As they say bigger flies better. This is an all built up plane. If you can build a trainer you can build this plane. You would have to do all the work your self to keep to your budget and may have to get a used engine. You can bring this plane in at 14-15 lbs. It flies better than most of your trainers.
