Other then when the engine died, does the boat normally take on a lot of water or is it pretty dry in there?

Depends on how aggressive you are. You can run WOT, and turn sharp with very little water getting inside, but it when you "swash" (spin) it out...thats when a good amount of the splash gets in.
I have not been in truly rough water yet either, but with the temps coming up, I might get some rough water time very shortly.
