Hi Charlie, I didn't mount mine per the instructions either. The method I described I just did because it looked easier and more structurally sound for the wheel pants. It sounds like you have the same hardware I used, but I'm sure your method will work as well. Wheel pants are wheel pants, as long as they get mounted!
