then I unhooked the tail esc from the hh gyro and put it in channel 3 and programmed that.I hope thats what I was supposed to do
That's correct. Be sure to connect it back to gyro when done.
You may want to try dual tail motor setup. That's what I have on my Jabo now (i do swap back&fort between DD and Dual).
