I made the same mistake on the 1st read too, but he said seaplane not sailplane. If he's been flying a seaplane for 1 1/2 years he's not going to have any trouble with a trainer. With that experience I'm sure it would be pretty simple without an intructor but 1 or 2 flights with one might make it a lot more enjoyable and easy.
