1st solo
I soloed yesterday when I went flying (7:00 pm). My instructor and I went up twice, and we flew around the pattern. I had two fairly nice landings. My take-offs were good. My instructor had me do a go-around just for practice. Then After my second landing he says to pull onto the side of the taxiway. He proceeds to take out my log book and signs me off to solo. He then takes out a hand held radio, and says if you have any problems or if that guy (there was someone flying around without their radio working) cuts you off just use the radio. I'll be right here. Then he says to remember the check-list (I miss a step once in a while) He hops out of the plane. He asks if i can hear him over the radio. I respond yup. Then he asks if the transmission is clear, and I again say yes. I start taxing down the runway. I keep looking next to me. It feels really weird not to have him there. I get down to the hold line, and hear my dad making a radio call that he was crossing the feild at 2400 feet. I go through the check list. Still a little nervous, I delay a little, by checking the weather. I then make sure my fuel pump is on. I check to make sure no one is on base or final, comming in for landing, it's clear. I make my radio call, "old Bridge Traffic Cherokee 41338 departing 2-4 Old Bridge" I taxi on to the runway and put in full power. I check the engine gagues to make sure they're in the green and check my airspeed (it's getting faster). When my airspeed reaches 70 MPH I rotate, and I climb out at 80mph. The plane climbs very well . At 700 feet I make my turn to X-wind, and make my radio call. Then I continue my turn to downwind and stop my climb at 1100 feet (pattern altitude). I make my radio call. I look out to the left for my dad. I later found out he flew past the feild a long ways to get out of my way (he knew there was a chance I was going to solo today). I get abeam the numbers and cut my power back to 1700 rpm and add in my first notch of flaps. The when I'm at a 45ish degree angle from the number I turn to base, and make my radio call. I level my wings out for a second and then thrown in my second notch of flaps. I then make my turn to final, and make that radio call, at the same time I throw in my third notch of flaps. At fist the lights are saying I'm high. Then I'm on the glide slope. I check my airspeed and it's dropped below 80 mph. I quickly add a little power and lower the nose. I keep descending. the lights are now saying i'm a little low. I then level out. The plane starts to drop, so i start to bring in the flare, and the plane touches down smoothly on the mains. I hold back pressure on the yoke to induce a little aerodynamic breaking. and gently touch on the breaks to slow myself down enough to exit the runway at midfeild. As I'm turning i turn my transponder to standby, lower my flaps, and turn my fuel pump off. My instructor says that was good, so if you want to go up again you can. So I do. I see my mom on the side. She had come to watch me solo. Then as I'm taxing back to up again i see my dad coming down with his instructor. He has a fairly smooth landing, one of his best. He pulls over to where the owner of the flight school, my mom, and my instructor are. He and his instructor get out of their plane and go watch my second solo flight. Another family who just happened to be there stopped to watch. I did the same thing again. My airspeed was a little better on final, and my landing was much better (one of my best landings). Then after landing I am congradulated by the owner of the flight school. He told me it was a nice landing. My dad congradulated me. My instructor was off on a quad making sure no deer ran out of the woods onto the runway as I landed. I taxied the plane back to the tie downs. Shut it down, and tied it up for the night.
