Default RE: Flip 3D

I had the exact same problem as did splais. I flew my Flip 3D yesterday for the first time. On the second flight I ran out of fuel. Reason, 10 oz tank doesn't last long enough for a Saito 91. But regardless here's what happened. At about 6 feet above the ground while landing dead the plane snapped. I thought I plenty of speed but I guess not. The other pilots thought I had plenty of speed also. The left wing tip hit first (in grass) then the main gear. I always replace my landing gear screws with plastic ones so that the screws break. In this case they did not break and the landing gear and attaching wood was ripped from the plane. So that should tell you that it was not a hard landing at all. After I retrieved the plane and analyzed the damage I noticed that the fuselage was cracked about 6 inches behind the wing. Both top and bottom was cracked and there was one small crack above the wing. This shouldn't have happened and the other pilots that saw it were just as shocked as I was. The semi-hard landing was not that bad. They said I should call Kyosho and ask for a replacement. After I got the plane home and started looking at it I decided to fix it myself. Reason being I didn't want to wait 6-8 weeks for another plane and I don't want another one built to break apart. So I started removing some of the covering on the rear of the fuselage. Much to my amazement there is no ply or spruce from the wing to the back of the fuse. I'm surprised this plane didn't come apart while I was flying it. Not only that this is the softest balsa I have ever seen. I'm no expert builder but I have built and repaired enough planes to know you need to have ply and/or spruce to keep the fuselage together. I believe the only thing keeping the fuselage together was the covering. I am extremely disappointed with the construction.

As far as how the plane flew when it was flying goes, it flew great and light. Definitely one of the best flying 3D planes. But if Kyosho hasn't done anything to beef up the fuse then you need to stay away from it. That will be my last Kyosho plane for sure.
