Default Verifying my charging rate

Hello, Im looking to learn some more information about batteries that I've been taking for granted while letting my peak detecting charger take care of the charging duties.

Im just now getting into electrics and have been charging both my Nicads and NiMhs from the same Wattage peak charger that has a battery selector switch to charge the fore mention batteries. I want to get this straight so at least I know what the charger is doing while its charging my batteries.

The spec sheet for my charger stages that it charges 250mAh - 2000mAh batteries with a variable dial selector. I understand that the charge rate for any of the listed values is from .25Amps - 2Amps respectively.....is this correct so far?

I just bought a Kan 1050 8 cell 9.6v pack so Im assuming that it is a 1050mAh pack? If I set my charger to charge approximately for a 1000mAh pack on my dial, Im charging around 1Amp till it detects its peak?

If this is all correct, are these batteries charging at 1C and if so is that a safe charge rate for prolonging the battery life?

Forgive me if this stuff is elementary but Its a little new to me.
Thanks
